Castle x Jessie Puppies @ 8 weeks
DOMUS does not have a litter planned at this time. We do know of high quality breeders with litters planned or available puppies. If interested please send a completed application and I can connect you to those breeders. I am happy to talk by phone to answer your questions and help you decide if this is the breed for you. You are welcome to come meet my Swissies and learn more about our plans once I have your application - this helps me know what you are looking for!
Raising our Puppies:
Socialization and Finding the Right Forever Families:
Puppies are socialized throughout their first months with us - in age appropriate settings! We introduce the puppies to new people and environments along the way from week 3 until they go to their forever homes. We believe puppies should stay with their littermates and mother until about 9 weeks to benefit from the socialization and lessons learned from interacting daily with their playful sisters and brothers. If possible, at about 9-10 weeks puppies need to be in their new homes and start their new lives. This is an important age for bonding with their new family, beginning to learn basic obedience and the rules of their new homes. (note: we are flexible if families have conflicts in their schedules!)
At ~7 weeks of age we do temperament testing using the Volhard assessment tool. This gives us a good idea of their social preferences, reactions to new sounds, sights and smells, how well they might do with smaller pet family members, children, various activities their families might want to do, like obedience or agility. This is just one view; but, it helps us make the best matches with our puppies and their forever families.
At ~8 weeks of age we assess each puppy to choose our show-prospect puppies based on conformation. From each litter we do not expect to keep more than 1 or 2 as show prospects. But, for the future of our breed, we do hope to find at least one in each litter to carry on our breeding program. After this is completed, we match the puppies to their new families - families who have an application already submitted, who we have talked with and met will have priority at that point!
Puppies are de-wormed starting at 2 weeks of age and every 2 weeks thereafter until they are 8 weeks old. Puppy homes are encouraged to follow their own vet recommendation from then on.
Vaccines (adapted from Dr. Jean Dodd/AAHA current recommendations):
Domus' vet: 8 Weeks of Age (puppies are ready to leave at least 1 week after their first vaccine to assure no adverse reactions)
Recommended for new families after this first vaccine (please consult your own vet in all cases):
11 Weeks of Age
14-15 weeks of Age
18 weeks of age (Note: New research states that last puppy parvovirus vaccine should be at 18 weeks old)
1 Year After Last Vaccination (we recommend a serum antibody titer instead of the annual booster. If antibodies are sufficient no subsequent vaccine is required for Distemper or Parvovirus. Perform vaccine antibody titers for distemper and parvovirus every three years thereafter, or more often, if desired.
Rabies vaccine - at least 3 weeks after last puppy vaccine, and as close to 6 months of age as possible. (Check state laws regarding rabies vaccine requirements).
